(CHINA - OPIUM WARS) BRITISH GUNNER'S PAPERS AND PHOTOS
A small archive of material related to Lt. Samuel William Withecombe, R.N., (1836-1937), a gunnery officer and possibly the last surviving officer of the 2nd Opium War. Included is: an admiralty certificate appointing Withecombe gunner 3rd class, Dec. 8, 1862, signed by Lords of the Admiralty Charles Eden, and one other; a certificate of early service signed by Capt. Roderick Dew of HMS "Encounter", and Capt. John McNeill Boyd, captain of the HMS "Ajax", who died while attempting to save the crew of the brig "Neptune"; certificate of discharge and character, August 1854, with two signatures of Withecombe; two certificates of good conduct, signed by Captains William Gordon and [?] Arundell of HMS Leven, Hong Kong, December 1861; biography handwritten on three pages; three cabinet photos, two in old age, also his grave site; and a holograph biographical sketch of his early career, incomplete, 1p. 4to., split and chipped.
