Halsey (1882-1959) is only one of four people to have attained the rank of Fleet Admiral of the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1904, served in the Great White Fleet, and commanded a destroyer during World War I. During World War II, on his flagship Enterprise, he commanded forces that raided Japanese-held targets in the Pacific, notably at Guadalcanal, the Solomon chain and Leyte Gulf.
