Description
English, c. 1890 (from Watson Records), engraved to the rear of the stand 'WATSON & SON, 313 High Holborn, London 1170', the microscope stands on a large brass tripod foot with trunnions to the top supporting the body, at the bottom is a large plano-concave mirror on an articulated arm on a sliding collar, above this is the mechanical substage with X-Y control, focusing and rotation via pinion and large gear, above is the mechanical stage with goniometer stage engraved around the edge 0-360, with X-Y control via rack and screw, with course focusing to the rear of the binocular tubes, nose piece with screw fine focus, Wenham prism in drawer, with interocular adjustment at the top of the binocular tubes via rack and pinion, accessory set containing a pair of binocular eyepieces, 2 Watson objectives, a polariser, and an analyser along with a few other items, all in a large fitted mahogany cabinet microscope height 48cm
Footnote: this microscope is a Ross Jackson model microscope No. Ia, which has been retailed by Watson, a careful look at the original handwritten Watson ledger reveals the word Rofs written to the right of many of the early entries suggesting that Watson was a main retailer for Ross.
