Description
1799 United States MAP 1ed Rochefoucauld Voyages in Canada INDIANS Saratoga
La Rochefoucauld-Liancourts account of his voyage to the New World is an important perspective on America and Canada prior to that of de Tocqueville. This masterpiece describes political and economic systems of the United States, cities, cultivation and agriculture. It is illustrated with folding charts and maps including maps of New England and a map of the entire known United States. Rochefoucauld provides extensive accounts of the Great Lakes, northern Canada, as well as the hardships and adventures encountered by those who emigrated from Britain.
The first volume in the set covers Rouchefoucaulds experiences in Pennsylvania and New York offering descriptions of towns and villages such as Philadelphia, Sheshequin, Wilkes-Barre, Canandaigua, Buffalo, Saratoga, Albany, and even Ontario, Canada. And while the notes on routes between cities is important, the most desirable aspect of this work is the accounts of Native American Indian villages near Lake Erie and Western New York.
