Description
David C. Roy (American, b. 1952), Tapestry Kenetic Wall Sculpture

1999-2002, kinetic wood sculpture, limited edition of 150, signed and copyright dated 2002 to central mounting disc, mounted to a cradled wood panel, wired for wood display.
41 1/2 x 41 1/2 x 8 in.
Based in Ashford, Connecticut, kinetic sculpture artist, David Roy, describes his own unique process and inspiration: "Mechanics and motion have always fascinated me. During college I studied physics, engineering and chemistry to further my understanding of how things worked. I graduated with a degree in physics from Boston University in 1974. This intuitive understanding of motion and mechanics combined with the artistic influences of my wife, Marji, led me to the creation of kinetic sculptures. My woodworking skills are self-taught. In 1975 we started "Wood That Works" and I became a full time sculptor. Since then I have designed and handcrafted over 150 different limited edition and one-of-a-kind kinetic sculptures. I design and build kinetic sculptures because I enjoy the act of creation. Taking an abstract idea and turning it into a physical object that "works" is a thrilling experience. I highly recommend it!

"Tapestry weaves intricate patterns of motion with the simplest mechanism I have designed. This is a refined version of the mechanism I first designed for the sculpture Wings. The off-balance wheels rotate in opposite directions until they lose their momentum and reverse direction. At this point a small, spring driven ratchet mechanism is engaged and starts the wheels spinning in opposite directions. The patterns of motion that result depend on the relative motion of the wheels just before they get their kick from the mechanism."
