A fine Impressionst landscape of Notre Dame de Mantes, France. 19th Century. The medieval Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Mantes is a large Catholic church constructed between 1155 and 1350 in the small town of Mantes-la-Jolie, about 50 km west of Paris, France.

Oil on wood panel. Framed.

Signed twice: lower left, inscribed into the paint while wet and lower right, painted. Circa 1890-1900.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Albert Dagnaux was born in Paris in 1861. He began his studies in 1878 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts under Professor Ernest Victor Hareux. His first exhibition was in 1883, at the Salon.

In 1890, he left the Salon to join the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, founded by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. His first major success came in 1893 with his tableau Avenue du Bois de Boulogne - Le Club des Pannes. Dagnaux exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. His studio on Rue Saint Didier in Paris became well-known and throughout his career, the artist painted nudes, portraits and landscapes. Most of his landscapes were made on location, en plein aire, after choosing the view with great care.

Albert Dagnaux died in Mantes-la-Jolie in 1933 after having devoted his entire career, from the age of 17, to painting.

Good condition. No damage or restoration noted. Four tiny surface nail holes in the corners (do not extend through the panel). Ornate period frame has been re-painted during the early 20th century, with wear and very minor losses to the plaster decoration.
