Description
A Matched Pair of Philadelphia Chippendale Carved Walnut Four-Shell Side Chairs, Third Quarter 18th Century. The Cupid's bow crest rail with knuckled ears and central scallop shell, above a pierced strap work splat centered with a tassel motif above a trapezoidal slip seat, the front rail with central scallop shell, raised on cabriole front legs with shell carved knees, terminating in claw-and-ball feet, the side rails having through tenons and pinned into the raked back legs with stump feet. The front seat rails stamped 'I' and 'V'.
Dimensions:Â Height 40in; width 23in; depth of seat 14 1/2in; seat height 18 1/2in.
Provenance:Â Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Condition
Two honest examples. Structurally sound. Retaining a very old darkened and dry surface. One chair lacking a glue block to the back right. General marks, wear, nick and surface scratches. The velvet upholstery is in generally good condition.
