ATTRIBUTED TO NAMIKAWA YASUYUKI (1845-1927) OF KYOTO
A Pair of Cloisonné-Enamel Jars with En-suite Covers
Meiji era (1868-1912), circa 1880s
Comprising two lidded jars worked in silver wire with a matching design, the body decorated with three panels enclosing either a bird or butterflies in flight over seasonal plants and flowers including chrysanthemums, hisbicus and kobushi (Kobus magnolia) on either a speckled light-brown, lime-green or yellow ground, all reserved on a reddish-brown ground of chrysanthemum heads and stylised foliage, the shoulder and foot with a band of formal foliate motifs, applied with a gilt-bronze rim and foot, each cover surmounted by a finial in the form of a chrysanthemum bud, each unsigned, each jar approx. 13.2cm (5 1/8in) high; together with a cloisonné-enamel koro (incense burner) and cover, of squat ovoid form raised on tripod feet, worked in silver wire and polychrome enamels and goldstone with cartouches depicting confronting pairs of phoenixes on a midnight blue ground; with chrysanthemum heads interwoven among karakusa ('Chinese grasses') on the shoulder and cover; unsigned, 10.5cm (4 1/8in) high.
