Item Details
Description
Offered here for your consideration is a rare Sityatki pottery olla. As with other Jeddito Yellow Ware types, Sikyatki polychrome production was centered on the Hopi Mesas. Sikyatki is named for a large archaeological site at which pot shards of the ware were found. It is said that the premier Hopi potter, Nampeyo, took her inspiration from the designs on these shards. From 1425 to 1629 A.D. these ancestors of the Hopi lived on the Mesas. The Sikyatki are perhaps most famous for their yellow ware polychrome pottery decorated with imaginative figural and geometric designs. This olla is an outstanding example of Sikyatki pottery with its surface decorated monarch butterflies and geometrics in yellow and red slip and it would be an outstanding addition to your collection or decor. Bid today!
PROVENANCE: Rust collection. The history of this collection comes from that of Dennis Sipe who owned the White Mountain Hereford Ranch near Springerville, AZ. After Mr. Sipe passed away, the Rust family acquired a large collection of prehistorics from the collection and this was one of the pots. It is unclear whether this pot was found on the ranch or traded for from another source. Included is a copy of a history of Sipe's ruin (believed to have been written by Mr. Hinckley in 1987) in which it is clearly stated that no burial sites were found or disturbed when excavations were done on the ranch.
MAKER: Unknown Sikyatki potter.
APPROX AGE: 1400 - 1600s.
SIZE: This item measures 14 inches across and 12 inches tall.
CONDITION: As found, wear and possible restoration expected. Please look closely at the pictures as they are an important part of our description and are hereby incorporated into the description, specifically with regards to condition.
