Richard Sussman (American, 1908-1971). Ink on paper painting titled "Aspiration" depicting a landscape with two pine trees, 1962. Pencil signed and dated along the lower right. With a label from the Minneapolis Institute of Art affixed to the verso. Titled along the verso.
Richard Sussman, born in Minneapolis in 1908, was a distinguished artist known for his captivating depictions of the Lake Superior North Shore's landscapes, including its changing seasons, rock formations, jack pine, and waterfowl. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art with Cameron Booth. He also studied at the Art Students League in New York and trained there with notable artists like George Grosz and Hans Hoffman. Sussman's works, primarily watercolors, are held in esteemed collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and University of Minnesota, among others. He exhibited widely, including at the Chicago Art Institute and the Brooklyn Museum, and taught at institutions like Macalester College and the University of Minnesota. Additionally, Sussman was skilled in stained glass work, with his windows adorning many churches across the United States.

Condition
The sheet is toned. Areas of foxing throughout. There are a few small areas of undulation. No visible tears, losses, or restorations. Water exposure visible along the lower edge of the mat - it is unknown if this extends fully to the drawing as the sheet has not been examined out of frame. Signs of water exposure to the verso of the frame. Framed under glass; wear to the frame. Not inspected out of frame.
