Description: Berosus, the Chaldean; Francesco Sansovino; Giovanni Nanni Le Antichita: E altre Scrittori, che trattano della stesse materie, sono Hebrei comme Greci e Latini. Altobello Salicato, Venice, 1583. An assortment of fictitious excerpts from Greek and Roman literary masterpieces, translated into Italian and credited to Berosus the Chaldean, with annotations by Francesco Sansovino (1521-1586). The title page features an eye-catching printer's device, while the text itself is filled with numerous ornate initial letters and headpieces. The text, a table of contents, a list of writers, and a four-page dedication by Sansovino to Florence's Roberto Strozzi come after the title page. The Babylonian creation theory, which was only known from this work until 1875, is one of its contents. A native of Babylonia, Berosus was also a priest of the mighty god Bel (Bel-Marduk). Though his precise birth and death dates are uncertain, he flourished both during and after Alexander the Great's reign.
