Item Details
Description
second half 19th century, 93 x 89 cm, Central Asia, Central Tibet

In Tibet, these very coarsely woven rugs with geometric designs are called “Wangdrum” or “Wangden drumze”. They come from Tsang Province in Central Tibet and were seat covers for the monks in the monasteries. Small square rugs like this example were placed on the chairs and the longer runners on the benches. Their most striking feature is the voluminous fur-like edge of long woollen threads, which are blue here but often red in other examples. The design seems to be full of energy and was intended to give the monks inspiration and inner power in their meditations.

Damage to one corner, otherwise very well preserved.
