Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A masterful bronze sculpture of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, also known as Lokesvara, wearing a short dhoti with a flowing hem that lies on one thigh and 4 arms bent outward to display the shuni mudra of patience and compassion with each hand. Hair tied up in a bulbous chignon, he presents a benevolent visage with an arching brow, downcast eyes, and slight smile, flanked by a pair of long-lobed ears symbolizing his sacredness. Avalokitesvara is a tenth-level bodhisattva associated with great compassion. The last great king of Angkor, Jayavarman VII, turned away from the Hinduism of his predecessors and adopted Mahayana ("great vehicle") Buddhism. He thought of the bodhisattva (eventual Buddha) Avalokiteshvara, embodiment of compassion, as his spiritual father and identified his own father with him.
