Rare early painting by famous painter and sculptor Luckner (or Lucner) Lazard who was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on July 7, 1928, and died on May 15, 1998. Lazard studied for five years at the Centre d'Art before receiving a scholarship in 1951 to study in Paris, France. In 1956, he founded the Brochette Gallery in Haiti and settled in the United States. Lazard's works have been exhibited in Europe, the Caribbean, North America, and Brazil. This very impressive and colorful piece is painted on an old sugar cane bag. The piece is in good vintage condition with some paint loss to the lower bottom (see pictures). Signed and dated on the lower right-hand side with orginal (though deteriorated) certificate of authenticity attached to the back; period wood frame. Measures approx. 35 1/2" x 29" (frame).
