Description

A Colima Figure with Bowls Comala substyle, West Mexico, c. 250 BC – 250 AD A unique and rare seated female figure holding a large bowl on her proper left shoulder, and another very large bowl to her front supported by her legs and right hand. She has a dramatic grooved updo coiffure, large ears, parallel grooves on her arms, and thin oval pieces of mother-of-pearl inlaid at her eyes. A rectilinear spiral grooved on her back. The large bowl is scored and painted in vertical bands on underside, with serpentine lines around rim. Earthenware with burnished red-brown and dark brown slips. In very good condition, both bowls are repaired with restoration over the break lines, a small chip on underside of nose.
