East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A wooden battle signal known as a gunbai with a convex triangular design that enabled it to be seen clearly from all angles. The 3 sides each depict a broad cherry blossom, and each surface of the upper element is covered in a layer of 26.9% gold foil. Lower handle missing as shown, and losses to gilding on some faces. Chipping and abrasions to wood components and gilding, with light earthen deposits within some recessed areas, otherwise in nice condition. Great remains of gilding throughout each of the 3 sides.
