Description
Antique Book Titled: Handbuch Fur Offiziere In Ben Anwendbaren Teilen Der Kriegswissenschaften...Author: Scharnhorst, Gerhard. First Edition. Publishing Place: Hanover. Year: 1790. Of great significance, and greater scarcity. The title roughly translates: "Handbook For Officers In The Applied Sections Of Military Science". Scharnhorst was a Prussian general and a noted tactician and theorist---but one with battlefield experience. He had a great deal to do with the control of the War Ministry from 1807-1812, after the Napoleonic Wars, and had two German naval vessels named after him. The National Union Catalog Of Pre-1956 Imprints has only one entry for this title, and that with only one location (NUC S 0185392, Library of Congress only, 1815, apparently a three-title reprint). One field manual---and perhaps ONLY one---was translated into English and printed in 1811 ("Militairisches Taschenbuch"). Old, neat penciled cataloging notes on the front pastedown of this copy note that there was no copy of the book in the British Museum or the Bibliotek Nationale. This is a clean sound, and attractive copy in the original binding, with the original endpapers. Quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands on the spine, but no lettering; I would assume that at least one skiver is missing. Octavo, p. (4), (xx), 1-349 (p. 348 is misnumbered "834"); there is one folding table in the text, and 5 folding plates bound in at the end. The sheets are very clean, save for a bit of occasional light foxing; and the plates, which oddly enough have never been misfolded, are also very clean. The book has one institutional mark; low on the title page is an old rectangular stamp reading "Bibliothek Valeriu Marcu". The front fly has an old neat signature, and the pastedown has the cataloging notes referred to above. The leather spine is clean and not dried out; shows moderate rubbing to the joints, and a small start at the top of one of them; in two small areas there has been some erosion of the top skin, and the head of the spine shows a little rubbing and flaking. The paper boards are clen, but quite heavily rubbed, and the board edges show some heavy rubbing or bumping in some areas. Condition: Very Good.
