Description
COL ROBERT MORGAN'S WWII USAAC PILOT WINGS Colonel Robert Morgan’s Command Pilot Wings of the US Army Air Corps. As a senior command pilot by the time he transferred to the Pacific Theatre of war to fly the Dauntless Dotty, Colonel Robert Morgan was entitled to wear these sterling silver command pilot wings, a hard-earned award only shared by combat pilots who had survived the rigors of combat. Crafted by Hilborn and Hamburg as evidenced by the ‘H H’ hallmark on the reverse, these are actually very rare since the company stopped using this hallmark after 1943. These were the most senior aviator wings awarded by the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and still are by the United States Air Force today. The Air Corps required an amazing 3,000 hours of flying time before the command pilot wings could be awarded, something Morgan had achieved by the time he was only 25 years old, having flown his historic 25 missions on the Memphis Belle over Europe. Spread eagle wings with the federal shield at the middle, surmounted by the senior pilot five-pointed star surrounded by a wreath, these historic wings have the pin clasp at the back. Era / Conflict: WWII . Country: US . Provenance: Memphis Belle Command Pilot Robert Morgan. Acquired from Morgan's Widow.
