Item Details
Description
Nepal or Tibet, ca. 1500 to 1600 CE. This is a painting of a mandala with a linen cover. The same symbol is inscribed eight times in red on the back of the painting, five times along the top and three along the bottom. There are also two large red hands impressed on the back. The yellow protective cloth is attached at the top. There is an early loop across the top for hanging the thangka. Top: Buddha seated, two disciples on either side. Center: The Mandala Circle for Tantric Meditation. This is a graphic representation of the process of concentration and introversive meditation leading to the attainment of insights and to activation of forces culminating in "Siddhi" supernatural forces. Bottom: Three Mahakala, or Protector Deities. The wrathful deities of Buddha are a form that Buddhas or Bodhisattvas (gods) may take to scare off, subdue demons, or remind people to be good. Two are Mahakala Thankga Gonpo Protectors wearing crowns of 5 skulls which represent changing the five poisons to the five wisdoms. The third eye in the center of their foreheads signifies insight and wisdom. The one on the left is Chana Dorje; the middle is a four armed Mahakala and on the right is the goddess Shri Devi, Dorje Rabtenma. Size: 42" W x 26" H (106.7 cm x 66 cm).
