Saul Raskin (1878-1966): American illustrator, painter, printmaker and critic. Born in Nogaisk, Ukraine, Raskin studied art in Odessa, attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy. In 1904 immigrated to the US. He worked in many media and had a reputation for his attention to detail and realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New York's Lower East Side. Trips to Palestine yielded artworks, included in 1947 book, Land of Palestine with hundreds of watercolors, drawings & etchings of Jewish life in Palestine preceding the Israel declaration of independence. The drawing on page 356, depicting dancing Halutzim, a study for this “Sunrise” painting. Raskin also illustrated Hebrew texts: Pirke Aboth, Haggadah, Psalms, Siddur, Kabbalah, Hebrew Rhapsody. Raskin work exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, Brooklyn Museum. His work collected by many major museums and galleries.
