After years in the business, one of Ohio?s main map sellers is selling his private collection of vintage maps. Within this sale are scarce maps that are rarely available, such as John Lodge?s uncommon Revolutionary War map of the area around Manhattan. Several of the original 1781 maps exist, but the 1870 Valentine?s Manual reprint offered in this sale is extremely scarce. It is one of several scarce New York City maps to grace this auction. The breathtaking, minutely hand-colored U. S. Coastal Survey map of the West Coast is something not to miss. This 1855 map is shown in several closeup photos that reveal the painstaking color work executed in this map. A similar Coastal Survey large map of Martha?s Vineyard makes a nice companion, with similar excellent hand coloring. A number of very desirable vintage maps of Texas will delight collectors from the Lone Star State, especially the uncommon first edition in an unusual vertical format from O. W. Gray?s first National Atlas of 1875. A surprise entry in this auction is the first Rand McNally map to be in an atlas. This 1876 map is quite large (three feet from frame to frame!) and is a grand railroad map of the entire United States. An exceedingly scarce item. Rarely seen in any venue are five Civil War maps by Edward Ruger, published in 1875. These interesting and informative maps trace the operations of the Army of the Cumberland through many of its most important campaigns, outlining such things as Jeff Davis?s Escape Route and various Union generals? routes traveled during their engagements. There are more surprises buried in this special sale, so enjoy! These are all authentic, collectible maps that have been held under archival conditions to keep them from harm. There are no modern reprints of any kind?they are all original engravings, lithographs or other type of image printed in the 19th century or earlier. All hand coloring, unless stipulated, is original and was executed at the time the map was produced by a
