ASIA WEEK AUCTION | A PASSION FOR PAINTINGS

Our auction this month offers you a very rare opportunity to purchase authentically old Chinese and Japanese paintings from an American estate with provenance dating back to an important, old Japanese collection established pre-WW II. The paintings were purchased by an American family living in Tokyo, Japan in the 1960s. Most all of the paintings were purchased directly from a descendant of a wealthy Japanese family from Tokyo. The majority of the paintings were gathered prior to WW II, circa late 1920s through the 1930s, by a senior member of the Japanese family who developed a passion for paintings. A number of the paintings still retain copies of their old receipts. Some of the paintings have exhibition and catalog records from the important Mayuyama Gallery that is still located near the wealthy Tokyo shopping area of the Ginza. The Mayuyama gallery was originally established in 1916 by Japanese art dealer, Mayuyama Matsutaro, who traveled to China in 1905 after the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) to purchase inventory for his new shop. Mayuyama bought paintings and precious objects directly from Chinese citizens who were liquidating their holdings. After the death of Matsutaro, his son, Junkichi, took over the family business. For any of you who may know the important Mayuyama gallery name, Junkichi was a close friend with Professor James Cahill, who was, and still is, a very important figure in the world of Chinese paintings. Cahill used to visit his friend, Junkichi, at the Mayuyama gallery in the 1960s where he, too, bought many paintings. Today, the Mayuyama family descendants still operate this very important gallery near the Ginza shopping district. This is an authentic, Japanese and American collection of old Chinese and Japanese paintings. Provenance with the private names of the previous owners, both American and Japanese families, will be provided to the winner.
