Item Details
Description
A VERY FINE DOUBLE SIDED RUSSIAN ICON TABLETKA FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 16TH CENTURY, NOVGOROD SCHOOL.  Both sides finely painted and depicting the saints or events celebrated on each day of the liturgical calendar for the month of December including the Nativity of the Lord, The Synaxis of the Mother of God, the 20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia and the Massacre of the Innocents. Displayed in a museum quality free-standing Plexiglas case allowing viewing from both sides. 9.75 inches x 8.8 inches (25 cm x 22.5 cm).

Tabletki were executed on gesso-stiffened cloth or vellum. They were made to be displayed on the analoi, a podium-like stand on which an individual icon was placed in the center of the church.  Tabletki functioned to show those entering the church what saint or festival or special icon type was being celebrated on a given day or during a given time. Being painted on both sides, and generally very thin, tabletki were easier to keep and store as a set for the entire year than full-scale icons painted on boards would have been.  Tabletki were also used as models, if need be, for the painting of new icons of the same saint or type.
