Thomas Edison Boldly Signed Check to Famed Horticulturist Henry Nehrling
1p, measuring 8.25" x 3", West Orange, New Jersey, dated November 10, 1928. Signed "Thos A Edison." Check No. 1190, from the Edison Botanic Research Corporation, paying $107.70 to Henry Nehrling. Edison signed boldly with his trademark "umbrella" signature. Signed for deposit on verso by Nehrling, along with three bank stamps. With perforated cancellation punches throughout, with some punches through Edison's "umbrella". Very good.
Henry Nehrling (1853-1929) was an ornithologist and horticulturist who grew exotic plants to be made accessible to the general public. Caladiums, palms, and bamboo were all introduced to the United States in his Palm Cottage Gardens. His gardens hosted many famous guests, including Edison and his wife, as well as naturalist Charles T. Simpson and botanist David Fairchild.
