Description
1870-S. NGC graded MS-65. Fully untoned with semi reflective fields and nicely frosted devices. This is a tough issue, with only 3,000 struck. Furthermore, branch mints were always quite busy striking these handsome coins from the Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans mints since the beginning of the series, San Francisco came along too in the 1850s. Then the Civil War broke out in 1861 and branch mint gold stopped being struck, even from distant San Francisco! Then, one lone issue appears for the Gold dollar, the 1870-S as an outlier as no other branch mint gold dollars were struck through the end of the denomination in 1889. That's one reason this date and mint is so popular with collectors, plus its downright rare in any grade. This particular gem is one of the two finest seen! So don't miss it if you have been searching for a really special coin to represent this splendid San Francisco date. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at NGC. (PCGS # 7570) Estimated Value $16,000 - UP
