Description
This is an excellent smaller map of much of northern Asia from the Black Sea to the Bering Sea. It shows the Bering Straight, not identified in the map, and in North America, the city of Axa and C. Califormio are named. Near the southern entrance to this straight is a large and strangely shaped Japan. The unnamed strait separating Asia and North America was inserted based on the theory of G Gastaldi. The map was designed to illustrate the expansive kingdom of the Great Khan in Asia. Much of the dimensions are out of proportion. This is from the pocket version of Ortelius' Theatrum, "Abrege du Theatre d'Ortelius, Contenat la Description des Principales Parcies & Regions du Monde..." P Galle published first the pocket versions, then also J B Vrients, commonly known as the Epitome from 1577 to 1602. This was published by Galle. Italian text on verso.
