Description
Dated 1881, Madrid, oil on canvas by Panamanian born artist Wenceslao de la Guardia, (1859-1908,) after a 1656 portrait of King Philip IV of Spain by Diego Velazquez (1599-1660.) In period gilt gesso frame. Signed lower right: W. de la Guardia. De la Guardia studied in Bogata, Colombia, and later settled in Costa Rica. He traveled extensively in Europe, participating in the Paris Salon in 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1884, during the time this picture was painted. The painting later was passed down to the artist's late granddaughter, who lived in Washington DC. Minor paint losses at bottom edge and small area of top edge. Frame, approx. 28" x 25". Sight, approx. 19 1/2" x 16 1/2".
