Description
This is a set of three frames, graduated in size, made and carved by Ray Fisher of Glen Springs, VA; known as the "Rush Creek Bum". Fisher is featured in Betty Carol Sellen's book "Outsider, Self Taught, and Folk Art (2nd edition).
All the frames are made from pine with thin plywood backs and bases. They are trimmed around the edges with what looks like commercial molding. On the largest frame, Fisher has carved a pair of boots, while on the other two he has carved two upright pieces for each, decorated with chip carving. These have slots in the back in which pictures can be slipped for display. On the one with boots, there are twotacks on the top and knobs on the boots to hold a picture. The sizes of the frames, from small to large are 61/8" high by 61/4" wide, 63/8" high by 61/2" wide, and 63/4" high by 7" wide. All of the bases are the same depth, just over 21/4" deep. They were probably done in the 1950's or '60's and are in excellent condition.
