A letter to a Mr. Southard, possibly U.S. Senator Samuel Lewis Southard (1787-1842) of New Jersey. Dated November 19, 1833. Clay discusses an upcoming visit and hopes the host will keep the gathering small as he wishes to avoid large crowds. Housed together in a common frame with a lithograph portrait of Clay.

Letter is toned, with two tears along top edge and water stains along right and bottom edges. Not examined out of frame. Lithograph toned and with surface abrasions and losses.
