Description
A beautiful ceramic Han Dynasty granary, China, c. 206 BC - AD 220, standing on a trio of zoomorphic legs. It is covered with a glossy green glaze that has oxidized into various shades of yellow-green in areas. The roof is divides into layered sections and the three horizontal incised bands divide the body into three sections. 10-3/4 in (27.3 cm) high, with a roof diameter of 7 3/4 in (19.7 cm). Good mineral deposits. Granaries such as this were funeral gifts, buried with the deceased as a symbol of wealth and to provide food in the afterlife. Ex John Schaeffer estate, FL, acquired in 1992.
