One of the rarest Civil War era carbines. The iron frame examples sold by Ben Kittredge in Cincinnati are well known. Only a handful of these early brass frame examples are known. Serial number 1,091. Brass frame, trigger guard and butt plate have acquired a pleasing aged patina. The lower sling swivel is attached to the rear of the bottom plate in military fashion. The upper swivel is missing as usual. The front and rear sights are in place, with the rear dovetail in the correct location for this elongated sight. The breech face has the salient first model extraction bevels, but a well made slide extractor has been added to the left side of the barrel. Interestingly other brass frame Wesson’s have been noted with this exact same extractor. Some surmise it was an aftermarket improvement installed outside the factory. The barrel has a nice plum patina. The bore has decent rifling and is dull grey color and beginning to turn brown. The action functions well. The stock has a few surface cracks originating at the butt plate, visible from the left side only. Lacks the steel bar on the right side of the barrel that restricts the distance the barrel will pivot when the breech is open. A very good looking gun overall.
