Item Details
Description
  • Title: Colonial era North America with the rarely seen ‘sea of the west’, 1780, by J. de la Porte. Paris
  • Date/Period: 1780
  • Materials: Copperplate engraved
  • Size: 9x7''

By far the most fascinating feature of his map is the massive fictitious inland sea of the west called ‘Mer De L’Ouest’. Even highlights the entrance by showing the passage. This would be where the southern tip of Vancouver island approaches northern tip of Washington state. Map names what’s also known today as the ‘Straits of Juan de Fuca’. The sea is even shown with several islands. A possible northwest passage is alluded to further north. The Alaska region is totally out of its actual geography, with what resembles Siberia’s Kamchatka peninsula tilted sideways and way to close to Alaska. Politically the map is made during the revolutionary war era and shows the American colonies, Canada, the massive Louisiana territory, and Mexico divided into southern region or Mexico proper and northern region ending at N. Albion. 1780. By Joesph de La Porte. From. ‘Atlas Moderne Partatif Compose de Vingt-Huit Carte sur Toutes, les Parties du Globe Terrestre’. Published in Paris.
