Description
20 ML glass vial of sand taken from the Island of Iwo Jima, by Sgt. Martin C. Connor of Syracuse, NY, a WWII veteran of HQ Co, 1st Bn., 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division. Sgt. Connor fought during the Iwo Jima Campaign. He was notable after the war for helping vets return captured Japanese items to families of Japanese Soldiers. He journeyed back to Iwo Jima with other 5th Marine Division veterans and met with former Japanese Soldiers in 1970 as a sign of peace. Either during this trip, or from his 1945 stay on the Island, he returned with a small quantity of this sand as a souvenir and put it in a bag labeled Iwo Jima Sand.
