Description
This certificate has it all: signature of a Confederate General, two great vignettes, nice condition and rare imprinted RN-U1 revenue stamp! The Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad was formed in 1870 in Virginia from three east[x=#8211/]west railroads which traversed across the southern portion of the state. Organized and led by former Confederate general William Mahone, the 428-mile line linked Norfolk with Bristol, Virginia by way of Suffolk, Petersburg, Lynchburg, and Salem. The AM& O was promoted as a trade link to the west, and further expansion was envisioned with the goal of increasing Virginia's Ohio Valley and Mississippi Valley commerce. It was heavily backed by investors from England and Scotland. During the Panic of 1873 it went into receivership. In 1881 the line was sole and renamed the Norfolk & Western. That is the date on the back of this certificate! #909 for 4 shares to James Hutton. Signed by president General William Mahone. Nice vignette of a steam train rolling through the countryside. The reverse has a great brown on whit vignette of train going over a bridge with row boats and steamships.
