Description
DESCRIPTION: A fine 1930s-40s NYC street scene at night by listed artist John Bentz. Great use of lighting in the streetlights and sundown sky. A figure of an older gentleman is in the foreground, with other figures, cars, and a double decker bus in the distance. I believe the very left edge shows a gothic church. There are no more WPA era examples of Bentz in any sales records I can find. But, he was clearly a part of the program as this painting has the original Federal Arts Project label still attached to reverse of stretcher. This is everything you want from a WPA regionalis painting of NYC. Condition
Does have some build up on the surface across the bottom edge of painting. There are some minor flecks of paint loss. Overall though, it is in original condition, with no signs of damage or restoration. A conservator could clean and touch this up and it will sign. We have provided excellent hi-res photos so you can judge condition for yourself.
