This is the first of the volume size copper plates offered in the auction. The prints for these were used in the smaller volumes each of which had extensive historical and ethnographic text about the tribes. Each volume was accompanied by a large supplementary portfolio and those plates had a Plate number assigned to each plate and print made therefrom.

Curtis constantly had the Indians re-imagine the past and stage events as here that would have happened in earlier times. This vision was to present the Indian as he was before the White Man came.

Condition

Very Good. Minor scratches, tarnish, dents, abrasions, small dark spots, and ink residue throughout plate surface.
