Confederate States of America, Two Scarce War Dated Bonds.

A fantastic pair of scarce Confederate items, consisting of two loan bonds.

The following are included in the group:

1. $100 Loan Bond - No. 7978. Richmond, Virginia; dated July 14, 1862. With 11 coupons remaining intact. Signed by Robert Tyler.

2. $500 Loan Bond - No. 230. Richmond, Virginia; dated October 2, 1862. With 18 coupons remaining intact. Signed by Robert Tyler. 

The bonds have flattened folds and minor toning. Varying degrees of light soiling and foxing.

Robert Tyler was the eldest son of President John Tyler and served as the Confederate Register of the Treasury during the whole of the war.

Just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, the newly formed Confederacy started issuing their own currency. The paper money was not backed by gold, but bearers were promised to be repaid after the war, with the government banking on a Southern victory. Production was in no way uniform and individual states, even cities issued their own money. The Confederacy also began issuing loan bonds, in an attempt to raise money to finance its government. Later in the war, due to overprinting of paper money, bonds started being used in an attempt to take some paper currency out of circulation.
