Description
Only about 1,000 of these revolvers were produced from 1851 to 1857, but they gained a certain renown from 200 sold to John Brown, shipped to him in Ohio and then on to Kansas in 1859. Developed in response to lawsuits by Colt against their dragoon revolvers, this pattern required the cylinder to be rotated by hand, using a release button inside the trigger guard, but made up for that step backward by incorporating the new Maynard Patent tape priming system that did away with percussion caps. The revolver is .31 caliber. The cylinder carries six shots. The hammer and lock plate are engraved with broad floral scrolls. The primer door bears a foliate shield with an eagle and is marked MAYNARDS PATENT SEP.22, 1845. The top strap is stamped MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE MASS. The barrel is stamped with a Nov. 26, 1850 patent date and assembly number 90.
Top strap markings light on second line. Hammer and lock plate engraving good. Cylinder and primer door good, but light on the eagle. Minor dings on cylinder. Otherwise smooth metal, gray on the frame and lock.Brown on the barrel and cylinder. Slight shrinkage gaps around lock plate. Small chip forward right edge of butt. An historic pistol for arms development and competition in the 1850s as well as the John Brown connection.
