MAUD EARL (AMERICAN/BRITISH, 1864-1943) OIL ON CANVAS, CIRCA 1890, H 25.25" W 30.25" CHAMPION CHOLMONDELEY BRIAR Signed lower left. Literature: Bylandt's Dogs of All Nations, 1904, Volume 2. Writing on the back of the stretcher reads: "Champion Cholmondeley Briar", KCSB/32967. Born March 1890. H.M. Bryan's of Cholmondeley Ponte, Malpas. Airedale Terrier one of the Pillars of the Breed. This painting reproduced in Comte Bylandt's 3rd Edition, 1904". Winsor & Newton's, London stamp on the canvas verso. Carved wood gold frame with linen insert, Frame Measurements H 30" W 36". Provenance: De Grimme Gallery, Grosse Pointe, MI. With original shipping invoice from London, dated 1971.
Condition
Original canvas, not relined. As viewed under UV light: Overpainting at the extreme right edge of the canvas. Areas light restoration in the skyline. Three small touch-ups behind the dog's back leg. Slight buckling of the canvas in the upper right corner. Pin-sized pigment loss in the upper right and lower right.
