Tadatsuna is a swordsmith from the Asai family, and hails from Banshu Himeji. He claims lineage back to the koto Awataguchi smith Kunitsuna, and worked for a time in Kyoto. After moving to Osaka with his son, he obtained first the title of Omi no Daijo, then was promoted to Omi no Kami.
His son was named Asai Mandayu, and went on to become the Nidai Tadatsuna and surpassed even his talented father in skill. He would go on to be known as one of the best of the Osaka swordsmiths, and was also famous for his horimono which decorated his swords and the works of his father. Both father and son received rankings for the cutting prowress of their swords, wazamono, and ryo-wazamono respectively. As well Fujishiro ranks them at Jo saku, and Jo-jo saku.
There is a sword which is designated to an important cultural property (the sword with the inscription ‘Ikkanshi Tadatsuna hori dosaku, on a lucky day September, 1709, held at the Kyoto National Museum). In addition, many works are designated to a cultural property by prefectural governments and municipal governments.
It is said that Zenzaemon SANO killed wakadoshiyori (a managerial position in Edo bakufu) Okitomo TANUMA, a son of roju (senior councilor) Okitsugu TANUMA, at the Edo Castle on May 13, 1784 with a short sword of the second Tadatsuna. Since Sano fought back Okitsugu TANUMA who had such a great power as being called Tanuma period (the period when Okitsugu Tanuma led the government for about 20 years during the middle of the Edo period) and was famous for bribery, he was admired as ‘Yonaoshi Daimyo-jin’ (the Great God who reformed the world). In addition, the sword of the second Tadatsuna which was his sashiryo (sword) became popular. Awataguchi Omi Kami Tadatsuna was a son of the 1st generation Omi Kami Tadatsuna. Later he followed the second generation. He often sculpted on the blade. And it became very popular. Ikkanshi Tadatsuna is good at Ashinaga Choji Midare. He also made Dorauba Hamon and Choji Midare Hamon. The Genroku era was a peaceful era in which flashy works were sought instead of sharpness. Numerous swordsmiths made Doranba Hamon with fat Nioikuchi, Sudare-Ba, beautiful Choji Midare and fat Nioikuchi Suguha Hamon. Thereafter, it had a strong influence until the end of the Edo period.
