One of the nicer Spencer 3-band rifles I've seen for sale recently. and possibly carried by a mounted infantryman in the famed Wilder-s Lightning Brigade. (see below) Strong condition and also very early production. The first 1000 or so Spencers were Navy Rifles with saber bayonet lugs. Then the next 10,000 or so Spencers were 3-band infantry rifles, of which this one was part of the earliest production. It carries serial number 4365 which is dead center in the range of serial numbers known to have been issued to the 72nd Indiana Wilder's Brigade. See the serial number data in the photo gallery. No rust, no pitting, no buggared screws, outstanding bore, no cracks, no splinters, etc... Really a top notch example... especially considering it was among the first ones issued. It has the early small font firm marking on the top of the frame. There are two styles. The barrel is smooth with an attractive light brown age patina and is free from defects or scratches. The stocks are very fine and have the look of well cared for heirloom furniture. Wood to metal fit is excellent. This rifle is 100% original, 100% complete, Mechanically perfect, and very handsome. As you can see from the serial number illustration most known issuances in the 4000 serial range went to the 72nd Indiana, Wilders Lightning Brigade.
