REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Netherlands, 1606-1669
“Three Heads of Women, One Asleep”, 1637. Usticke's first state (of three), New Hollstein’s second state (of three), printed after the first “R” of the signature was rebitten. 1.75” printer’s crease upper right edge. Bartsch 368; Biorklund 37-D; Holstein (White and Boon) 368.
Etching, 5.5” x 3.75" (140mm x 97mm), thread margins. Framed 13” x 11”.
Provenance:
Reverend J. Burleigh James, with the collector’s stamp (Lugt 1425) verso.
Notes:
Reverend James assembled an important collection of prints, mainly by Rembrandt and Dürer, that was dispersed at Sotheby's in three sales in 1877.
