Description
When discussing this pot with Mark Hewitt, he explained this is one folk pot that he recalled. Created in honor of the the American Flag. And designed to be among his very best and among the largest he created at that point in his career. Each extended lug handled has stars stamped all over. The upper half of the outside of the pot is purposely glazes to create a striped finish. Once explained, it's obvious. All 4 handles have phenomenal, but also free-flowing decorated glass runs. Also unusual (because he was greatly pleased with his work), he stamped it under one handle (very rare). As with Lot #67, this comes from an elite Chapel Hill collection originally. The collector was an aficionado's of Mark's work in the 1980's & 90's. This is a version of a Hewitt large planter, but so much more. Stamped/signed as noted under 1 handle. Stands 20.5" tall, 24" wide.
Condition
Overall excellent condition. The firelines only on the base only (as pictured) were sealed by the former owner, but there are no issues. Given the uniqueness of the pot, this would not have made it to Mark's seconds table (most pots that are 2nds are not even offered at the kiln openings-maybe dozen are on the table at the beginning of a kiln opening).
