Description
Several original pages from the April 18, 1826 featuring two advertisements in which James Monroe offers Ashlawn Highland for sale - "For Sale, the residue of my Mountain Tract of Land in Albemarle county, near Charlottesville...", "the whole tract is remarkably well timbered and watered and advantageously situated. On the mountain part there is a commodious dwelling house, nearly finished, with a Grist and Saw Mill, and there are other improvements on other parts of the tract", and "I shall attend on the premises to treat with those who may be disposes to purchase. - JAMES MONROE". According to the Highland website, the rise of cotton in the 1820s, which could not be grown on the mountainous, grain-growing land, contributed to Monroe's financial straits, necessitating the sale of the land.Page: approx. 21" x 14 1/2".
