Description
Abraham Lincoln "Freedom To The Slaves" Print by Currier & Ives, Rare!
1p, measuring 11.75" x 15.5" (sight), New York, undated [Ca. 1865]. A color print entitled "Freedom To The Slaves", published by Currier & Ives. The hand-colored lithograph shows a male slave, with his wife and two children, kneeling to kiss Lincoln's hand. A shackle and gun rest at their feet as Lincoln's arm rises skyward. Framed to the overall size of 16" x 20". The print has bright colors despite being toned throughout. Two tears are present at the lower right edge and a repair has been made at the upper left corner. Overall very good.
This commemorative print by Currier & Ives was issued soon after the assassination of President Lincoln. Lincoln is portrayed as the Great Emancipator in celebration of his achievements following his death. The image would go on to be used in many variations by different publishers. Lincoln's face was allegedly based on a February 1864 portrait by Mathew Brady (Ostendorf O-92).
