Botany.- Grew (Nehemiah) The Anatomy of Plants, first collected edition, initial imprimatur leaf signed by Christopher Wren, 83 engraved plates, 5 folding, woodcut initials and head-pieces, small paper flaw hole to outer margin of Kk2 and another to Qq1 touching one letter, one or two plates with light staining but generally an excellent clean copy, David Bellamy's copy with his signed bookplate, modern panelled sprinkled calf with borders in blind, blind-stamped spine in compartments with morocco label, some slight fading and a few minor scuffs to lower cover, lower corners bumped, [Wing G1945; Henrey 162; Hunt 362; Nissen BBI 758], folio (c.310 x 195mm.), by W. Rawlins, for the Author, 1682.
⁂ The birth of the microscopic anatomy of plants. Grew, and his contemporary Malpighi in Italy, were the founders of the science of plant anatomy. Grew was the first to observe the sexual nature of plants and ascribe the male functions to the stamens.
