Co-author Rutgers suggests that the period circa 1631 was a pivotal year in which Rembrandt began to experiment and acquire fluency in engraving. Protected in an attractive antique wood frame. Appears similar in origin to the other Rembrandt "Self Portrait in a slant fur cap" (1631) also in this auction.
