Description
Hasegawa (Takejiro).- Unger (Mary E.) The Favorite Flowers of Japan, "second edition" [but third edition], colour woodblock illustrations throughout by Mishima Shoso, ink ownership inscription to head of frontispiece, bound Japanese-style, original pictorial boards, some chipping and splitting to spine, spotting and toning to covers, chipping and splitting to spine, [Sharf p.69], 4to, Yokomaha, Hasegawa for Boehmer & Co., [1911].
⁂ First published in 1896, Favorite Flowers of Japan was the first collaboration between Hasegawa and the Boehmer nursery. Louis Boehmer established the nursery 1882 and sold the business to Unger in 1895. The lucrative business of exporting Japanese plants to European collectors had become far more comitative in the interim, with the Yokohama Nursery Company's handsomely illustrated catalogues proving especially popular. The present work represented Unger's response to these market innovations and proved immensely popular.
