Description
(1923 - 1955) U.S. Marine during World War II. A Pima Indian, Hayes enlisted in the Marines on August 26, 1941, and, after recruit training, volunteered to become a Paramarine. He fought in the Bougainville and Iwo Jima campaigns, and was one of the six flag raisers immortalized in the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal. Suffering from PTSD, he would die from exposure and alcohol poisoning. Fine content A.L.S. signed twice, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], May 23, 1953 to Major Ralph Wray who was involved in the dedication of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington which includes a statue representation of Rosenthal's photograph. In part: '...I'm now making my home in Chicago. I'm now working for International Harvester. Could you help me in securing Discharge papers for me, as I lost my original ones. My serial number is 448803...' Hayes signs at conclusion and again writes his name and mailing address at bottom. Very good condition. Hayes is rare in any form.
