Description
A rare expressive animated ink drawing on paper titled Neuf Personnages Fond Noir (Nine Characters Black Background) by French artist Jean Dubuffet. Signed on the bottom left with an October '61 date. On the verso is the original gallery tag from Donald Morris Gallery Inc. Detroit, Michigan. This is an iconic Dubuffet compostion where the cartoonish, spontaneous, squiggled figures create a buzz of energy while floating in the negative space. A rare opportunity to collect an original drawing from an artist that inspired low brow art movements such as graffiti and street art. Buffett eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. From a private collector in West Bloomfield, MI. Dimensions: 16.5h x 19.5w (framed). In very good vintage condition.
Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was an influential modern artist best known for founding the art movement Art Brut, a French term that translates as 'raw art' to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. Dubuffet had an expansive and influential career throughout the 20th century. Today, his pieces can be found in collections around the world, including those of the Pompidou, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, the Museum Ludwig in Germany, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. In 2021, the Barbican Centre in London will open an exhibition spanning four decades of Dubuffet's practice.
